Thanks Greg. We had no idea about the Ikea purchase. The kids got a kick out of that as I took them to Ikea one afternoon (don't have them in New Zealand!) and they loved it! We may have to visit another Ikea in the near future just to see what Zsolnay they offer. Can't possibly be as beautiful as the porcelain in the museum, but you never know. Thanks for the comments!

I follow Zsolnay porcelain, so your blog came up on my Google Alerts. Glad you enjoyed yourself. I lived in Pecs for many months. It may interest you to know the Zsolnay was recently bought by Ikea, which will begin carrying their line. Also, did you notice how the Christian cross was placed atop the Muslim crescent on top of the Mosque Church? A non-so-subtle statement from the Christian Hungarians who claimed the church. Cheers!

Man, you keep me on my toes! Your postings are ALMOST as informative as mine! Yes, you are correct in that people do believe Santorini is where the lost city of Atlantis was located. There is an archeological site called Akrotiri there where an advanced civilization was buried by the ash and perfectly preserved. They have dated some of the objects in Akrotiri back to the 5th century BC and followed the towns development into a cosmopolitan merchant until the mid 17th century BC when all life on the island was destroyed by the final eruption. Historians have also linked the volcanic eruption of Santorini to the plague of darkness brought upon Egypt by Moses. The island was then recolonized in the early 8th century BC by Dorieis who named it after their leader Theras (the official name of the main island is Thera) and has been inhabited ever since. Amazing stuff!

SANTORINI GEOLOGY

Correct me if Im wrong but I think some people believe Santorini is where ATLANTIS was.

Im sure there are some unimaginable things buried under the lava and ash.

MARK

The islands of Santorini did not form from a single event, but rather from a variety of eruptions over a long period of time. Geologic studies indicate that at least 12 eruptive phases have occurred over the last one million years. The late Bronze Age event was a Plinian eruption of epic proportions, with an estimated Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) of 6.9. The immensity of this eruption is equaled or surpassed by only seven other terrestrial eruptions in the past four millennia. Before this catastrophe, Santorini was a large circular island with a water-filled embayment to the south or southwest. During the late Bronze Age eruption, the central highland of the volcanic island collapsed to generate the modern caldera.

It sure sounds like Matt picked the favorite country to visit on your wonderful adventure. The pictures have been gorgeous. Now you can get ready for Uncle Gary's visit next weekend. I know it will be brief, but you can fit in lots of fun things to see and do in 36 hours. Love to everyone.

If you really want to see well perserved (and interesting) "Old", visit Jordan. Jerash (about 50km north of Amman) is the best preserved Roman City in the world, and about a 3 hour drive south from Amman is Petra. Hire a private guide for the day, and wear something comfortable. It is a lot of walking but the scenery is like nothing else on earth.

This is the time of year to go.
